Spelling at St Matthew’s Primary School
Spelling at St Matthew’s is taught through a structured and progressive approach that supports pupils at every stage of their development. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we use the Read Write Inc. programme to build strong foundations in phonics, enabling children to develop secure spelling strategies through their understanding of sounds and letter patterns. This systematic approach helps pupils to segment words accurately and apply their phonics knowledge confidently in their writing.
In Key Stage 2, we build on these foundations using the Ready, Steady, Spell programme. This provides a clear progression in spelling knowledge, including rules, patterns, and morphology, while also reinforcing strategies such as proofreading and editing. Across the school, pupils are encouraged to apply their spelling skills across the curriculum, developing accuracy, independence, and confidence in their written work.

Strong Foundations for Spelling
Strong foundations in spelling and handwriting are key to confident writing. In Key Stage 1, children learn letter–sound connections and spelling through the Read Write Inc phonics programme. In Key Stage 2, they continue to develop these skills alongside fluent handwriting using Ready Steady Write. This approach helps children write accurately, express their ideas clearly, and build confidence across all subjects.
